Generative AI has become a defining technology of this century, known for its ability to do things like draft business memos, debug code, summarize research, and generate design concepts with near-human fluency. But the same tools that bring efficiency and productivity gains feed a darker side, too, empowering malicious actors and opening the door to misinformation.

 

GenAI’s reach now spans every sector, from education and law to healthcare and finance with ChatGPT and DALL·E proving that machines can now create, not just calculate. And across sectors, it has begun to shift the baseline for what’s possible by reducing friction in the flow of work, turning data into decisions, and amplifying what skilled professionals can achieve under pressure.

Generative tools support students by breaking down dense academic texts, simulating exam questions, and offering personalized feedback, all at scale. Far from replacing teachers, they extend instructional reach. Yet the same attributes that make generative AI powerful also make it dangerous. One of its most immediate threats is the propagation of misinformation. These tools can convincingly fabricate content, spreading deepfakes, fake news, and synthetic political messages at scale. Government-linked groups in Russia, China, Iran, and others have deployed deepfakes and chatbots to sway voter sentiment, using tailored narratives and misleading audiovisual content to amplify discord (Wikipedia, 2025).

For instance, a recent Varonis study, the State of Data Security Report: Quantifying AI’s Impact on Data Risk, nearly all of the 1,000 organizations whose data risk assessments were reviewed said sensitive data had exposure to AI tools and almost as many–nine out of ten–said those tools had access to sensitive data in the cloud.
